I might be committing sacrilege here, but I'm worried about this one.

Watching the previews, it's got a lot of stuff going on. All the various characters, the backstory...I'll be curious to see if they can pull it off.

One thing I find myself questioning is the choice of Lie Schreiber as Sabretooth.  Liev seems too...well...articulate for such a savage role. I'm not sure I'm buying it.

What do you guys think?

I'm a little nervous about it, too.

Random thoughts about the trailer(s):
  • Boy, Hugh Jackman sure looks...veiny, doesn't he? Wolvie's about to pop a vessel.
  • What's with chomping on the cigar at the Normandy (assuming it's Normandy) invasion? Seems a little out of place.
  • Launching dudes at helicopters. I don't know, I'm just not feeling it.[/i]
I'm trading high hopes for low expectations at this point.

X3 sets a low bar (or perhaps I'm just overly critical because they screwed up the Dark Phoenix Saga ... wait, no it really did suck ... as you where).

I don't know that we needed this extensive mutant team for a Wolverine solo movie, but I guess they needed to throw in enough mutants to keep Hollywood interested. I've got some of the same concerns as you, and I doubt it'll come close to X2, but some how, I remain cautiously optimistic.

Actually I hear they are doing a Deadpool spin-off from this movie, and hey, maybe that will be cool!

That Ryan Reynolds, he's a funny fella. Unfortunately, becoming locked into the Deadpool role pretty much eighty-sixes any lingering chance that he'll be portraying The Flash in the future.

I didn't even know who Deadpool was until I looked up the Wikipedia article a couple hours ago, to see why they'd do a movie on him.
Now I think I would like the character. (I humbly accept being pelted with refuse at this point, for not knowing who Deadpool is.)

But you're right, I can see how "wisecracking" would define both Flash and Deadpool.
The Flash TV series was so far ahead of its time.

My memory tells me that the Flash series was quite good.  I fear to watch it now, lest said memories be proven quite false.

Since noone has weighed in on this thread about the movie, my encapsulated review: I enjoyed it quite a bit. It was not a "good movie." It was, however, a good adaptation of Wolverine's comics origin story, which as we all know is a convoluted, tragic mess. Overall, better than X3, but not at the level of the first two X movies. Perhaps a 5/10.

As to Deadpool, I'm a steadfast fan from the comics, but interested enough in the direction they took him in the movie to look forward to his own moving picture.

I watched about half of the first (only?) season of The Flash last year, and I was pleased with how well it stood the test of time. Some of the effects that drove the budget through the roof back in the day are a bit cheesy by today's standards, but still pretty decent for television. There's definitely a strong Batman influence, from the Danny Elfman theme (which I still love, despite the fact that it sounds like every other Danny Elfman theme from that time period) to the costume (again, loved it) to the moon-as-logo shot from the first episode.

Moon-as-logo? Yup. Check out the screen caps below. The first is from Batman, leading up to the final showdown with Joker. The "dark" knight flies the batwing up against the moon to form the bat symbol. In The Flash, there's a showdown at an electrical grid substation. An errant rocket unleashes bolts of electricity, one of which just happens to streak across the face of the full moon. Nifty!

That reminds me.  My kid has been after me to make him a Flash logo t-shirt.  Guess I should get on it eventually.
