It was inevitable...

So...what are you reading right now?

On my plate:

  • Sailor on the Seas of Fate - Michael Moorcock
  • Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs - Hal Abelson, Jerry Sussman and Julie Sussman

The Physics of Superheroes by James Kakalios.

In order to be able to leap a tall building in a single bound, Superman must have come from a planet where the force of gravity is 15 times that of Earth's. We are able to determine this by making certain reasonable assumptions (such as Superman's mass) and the simple application of Isaac's Laws:

  • A robot in motion tends to stay in motion unless ordered to stop by a human being; a robot at rest tends to stay at rest unless ordered to move by a human being.
  • A robot may not stay in motion or remain at rest if doing so will cause harm to a human being.
  • For every good robot, there is an equal and opposite evil robot.

Physics makes my head hurt.

I just started reading trying to read All the Windwracked Stars by Elizabeth Bear.

And now I am quitting and reading something else.
Every other word was "invented dystopian future techno/magibabble" or "borrowed Nordic/Germanic mythology words with no explanation".

Sorry Elizabeth, I give up on this book.

The Android's Dream by John Scalzi. If you can get past the fact that the entire first chapter (yes, the entire first chapter) is an extended fart joke, it's a really cool book. Some folks aren't going to get past that first chapter, though.

I've finished The Android's Dream and now I'm casting about in the darkness for another book.

Should I:
  • ...finish something I've already started (The Way of Shadows, Lamb)?
  • ...start something new from my bookshelf (The Nymphos of Rocky Flats, In the Company of Ogres)?
  • ...buy something new? If so, what?
  • ...give up on the printed word altogether? It's so 20th century.

You people disappoint me, you really do. How often do I turn to you for advice? Not very. And yet, when I give you an opportunity to shine, to step out of your dank little hole and into the spotlight where you will be afforded my full attention...you squander it away. Was it out of fear that suggesting the wrong thing would earn my wrath? Did you think that suggesting nothing would spare you? Fools!

Fools.

Well, I don't need your advice any longer, thank you very much. Lacking even a single suggestion, I've made the decision myself. Without you. Honestly, I ought to fill your aforementioned dank little hole with water. How would you feel then, hmm? How would you feel if I got out the garden hose and flooded your little den? Like a common mole; that's how you'd feel. That's what you are to me: moles, every last one of you.

Hurts, doesn't it?

Almost as badly as being completely ignored, I'll bet.

See if I ask you again. See if I—after finishing John Scalzi's The Last Colony, which I selected without your advice by the way—ask for your opinion again. Do you think I will? Well, I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you.

Actually, it's probably a good idea to hold your breath, considering I'm filling your rotten little burrows with water.

Well anyway... sorry?

I just finished Storyteller by Amy Thomson, because I found it in the $1 pile and liked the cover art.
I liked pieces of it, but pieces I didn't like, and I sort of skipped to the end & don't necessarily recommend it.

I just finished Star Wars: Legacy vol. 3: Claws of the Dragon (a graphic novel set 100 years after the Battle of Yavin), during which time the Republic Alliance has been reduced to little more than a rag-tag fleet, and the Sith Empire rules the galaxy (have deposed the previous Emperor, who continues to oppose them in exile).

I'm also reading the Open Game Table: The Anthology of RPG Blogs:
http://www.amazon.com/OPEN-GAME-TABLE-Anthology-Roleplaying/dp/0578014742

I'm on the RPG Bloggers list, and heard about this project as it went from brainstorm to actual product, but it's still surprising me, mostly because it includes posts from bloggers I don't regularly follow (as well as many that I do).
