Peter Sagel had in interesting commentary on imaginary worlds and growing up on NPR yesterday:

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=102250008

I'm curious to know what you think of his point of view. I remember long hours of reading and living in fantasy realms when I was younger, but for the most part I've not embraced the world of online games, save for MUSHing, which I had to give up.   DO you think kids today will have more problems than we did adjusting to real people?

Yeah, I DO think kids today will have a tougher time - but not because there's a glut of imaginative fantasy for them to escape into. Rather, I'd say it's because there's such a glut of UNimaginative pre-processed Disneyfied fantasy for them to lose themselves in.

As is true in so many cases, we can turn to Terry Pratchett for a good way to put it:

"Fantasy is an exercise bicycle for the mind. It might not take you anywhere, but it tones up the muscles that can."

But if the fantasy in question has no ... wait for it ... MYTHIC resonance, if it doesn't make you think and feel, then it's like an exercise bike that never goes any higher than the easiest setting.

Or maybe I'm wrong.

Okay, you look like Mick Bradley, and you claim to be Mick Bradley, but how do I know you're actually Mick Bradley?

Say something only Mick Bradley would say.

But if the fantasy in question has no ... wait for it ... MYTHIC resonance, if it doesn't make you think and feel, then it's like an exercise bike that never goes any higher than the easiest setting.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Mick Bradley.

Seriously, welcome to our forums, Mick. We're glad to have you.

Now, on to business:

Does fantasy as presented through the filter of Disney really lose all of its mythic resonance? Or is it still there but we've decided—whether consciously, subconsciously, or through good old groupthink—that Disney is pablum and there can't possibly be anything worthwhile behind all those Elton John lyrics? Discuss.

Well I know that last week I 'killed off' (or put in storage, at least) a personal avatar I'd had for about 20 years, and it is still a sore spot in my brain.
But I think that has a lot more to do with personality and mental investment and not much to do with the glut of fantasy worlds out there to choose from.

So I'm sure that people who have trouble with reality have more outlets to ignore reality these days,
but anyone that wants to find a place to escape to - whether a book, or a game, or a forum, can always find one.
Whether the escape is healthy or not is probably up to you.

I could not agree more. That's one of the reasons I enjoy the books I do is because of those mythic resonances.  At the risk of sounding like an old man, the games, movies, and television that the entertainment industry pumps are are completely sterile...they have no life in them at all.  That, I think, is the danger.
