News: The moat dredging is scheduled for 1200 hours this Wed. Petunia (the giant squid) will be irritable during this time. We recommend using the south entrance instead of the drawbridge. --Mgmt.

Okay. I'll admit to being a bit lost.  I know there have been many generations of Star Wars RPGs, but I'm a bit confused as to what is the most recent, and what makes it different from the past versions. Can someone enlighten me?

Also, what's the financial outlay to jump in?

Star Wars Saga Edition is the most recent edition with SW s20 being before that and I believe SW D6 started it all out.  Core Book is $39.99 MSRP but obviously cheaper on Amazon

CHeck out a full list here

The original Star Wars RPG was from West End Games and featured a d6 mechanic that resulted in many an aborted game of Monopoly and Clue because who the hell keeps stealing the dice? One of the biggest criticisms I've heard is that non-human characters get the short shrift due to stat limitations that prevent growth.

WEG released two editions of their d6 Star Wars RPG before they...I dunno, lost the license, I guess.

Wizards of the Coast currently has the license and they've got at least two editions as well. Both use a d20 mechanic, but the latest (Star Wars Saga Edition) utilizes some of the D&D 4E concepts.

Or so I've heard.

The origional WEG lost the license when the Owner of WEG lost a ton of money in his Shoe business and could not pay the licensing fees at the time they were due.

There have been three editions of d20 Star Wars; as was noted, Saga Edition is the newest of these.

Saga Edition is basically what I expected D&D 4E to be ... before 4E came out. It streamlines the 3.x rules nicely, ditching saving throws in favor of Reflex/Fortitude/Will Defenses, consolidates the core classes, and introduces a new talent tree mechanic that's somewhere between a feat in 3E and a power in 4E.

Jedi remain powerful, perhaps a bit too powerful, but hey, that's Jedi right? The nice thing about Saga is that the other classes (scoundrel, soldier, noble, scout) aren't sidelined by the Jedi. They each have their own niches, and Saga retains a meaningful skill system (4E's went past "streamlining" to "gutting" IMHO).

My group enjoys it -- we'd been running D&D 3.x Greyhawk forever (well, 8 or 9 years, however long 3x was out) and 2E before that. Some of the guys in the campaign had been getting frustrated with the creakier aspects of 3x (such as the "Save vs. Do Nothing For 3 Hours" effects. We tried out 4E, but while some in the group liked it (namely those who were getting tired of 3E) the old guard, diehard Greyhawk fans hated it. With a passion.

So we decided to run Star Wars instead. We just completed a run of 13 sessions. We're taking some time off to do some playtests, but I expect we'll be running it through the fall.

The campaign web site is here:

We're still fleshing it out, but it gives you an idea of what we've been up to.
