We've still got to record our episode discussing Old Man's War by John Scalzi, but that really shouldn't stop you folks from discussing the book.

Did you read it with us?  What did you think?

I really enjoyed the world and premise of the book.  Scalzi's writing is clean and evocative.  Never straightforward, there is always a complication to make events interesting.

Being vague to avoid spoiling for those who haven't read yet.

Of the three books in the series, I liked this one most -- it's fast paced military SF with a good mix of wit and characterization. Comparisons to Heinlein are inevitable and, IMHO, appropriate.

I completely agree. Beyond the space military aspect, the fact that all the characters were witty and educated reminded me a lot of Heinlein. That's a good thing. Number of the Beast and The Cat Who Walks Through Walks completely hooked me because of how witty the characters were.

I just got the book out of the library on your recommendation!

Looks like Scalzi is going to be at a book convention on May 9, in Columbus (which is a drivable distance if you are from the IHOJ area).

That's Lieutenant Hireling to you.

Over 5 hours is going to be a bit much for me to drive though.
