As a long-time comic book geek, I took it to be a Stan "The Man" Lee reference. Stan, the former Chairman of Marvel Comics and co-creator of many legendary comic characters (Spider-Man, The X-Men, The Incredible Hulk) regularly wrote a "Bullpen" piece in Marvel Comics and "Excelsior!" was his traditional sign-off.
