Why Did The Zombie Cross The Road?

Balticon has come and gone, and I am returning on the long trek to my abode in Illinois. How was Balticon you ask? I appreciate you asking, thank you.

Balticon was an experience. I have gone to many gaming conventions, but only one genre convention and that was Dragon*Con. I didn’t go to any panels or signings at Dragon*Con, which unknown to me at the time Is what you do at genre cons. So while I was bored there any time I wasn’t hanging out with friends, I corrected the issue with Balticon.

Balticon was a blast. I nearly screwed it up by avoiding the panels and talks, just like Dragon*Con. After looking at all of the talks that the Lair folks were giving and attending though, the light went on in my brain and I put the gaming con mindset out of my head.

So, a few things that I enjoyed at Balticon:

  • Iron Writer, hosted by Pamela Gay and with luminary contestants of: Mur Lafferty, Scott Sigler, Paulo G., and Christiana Ellis. “You’re gay,” said the fish. – Scott Sigler
  • Jim Van Verth’s talk on how video game math works. It was a great beginner level talk, and I wanted even more.
  • Our own Doctor Cmar, and his talks on medical studies for the non-medically trained, alien sex, and the panel on the TRUTH about adult content.
  • Fables of the Flying City, I know how part two starts… and you don’t! Put on by Jared Axelrod. When the graphic novel comes out next year, we will come to your door and make you buy it.
  • The master level audio talk – I now know that I didn’t know anything about recording audio.

Aside from the panels and talks, there were the people.

I met many new people, reconnected with friends, and drank quite a fair amount. Maybe more than fair.

Thank you for the welcome and open arms that strangers gave to me. I won’t be returning them, so you may have to get more. I will however, use them to good effect when I return to Balticon next year.

If you are in Maryland on Memorial day weekend next year, come to Balticon. I know that I will be.

Oh, and why did the zombie cross the road? You missed. You really need to work on your aim.
